How about real back to front? The back row goes first, then the seceond back row, etc. Then you won't stop eachother as much. The 5th last won't hold up the 2nd last.

I'd be all about the "perfect" method were it proposed seriously. My improvement over your "perfect" method is a back to front arrangement that has every customer fill their seat in a window to aisle fashion but done by order of loading. In this way, no seat shuffle, no waiting for the one in front of you with nothing to do after the one at the back of the last full load is in their seat and everyone is occupied with either movement, loading or seat taking during the majority of the load. This does not however, solve unloading. Unavoidably, the only way to make unloading any faster without additional exits is if everyone who loads, unloads in exactly the opposite order they loaded in. It'd be great for the airline to make the same amount of money faster but for it to be adopted, ideally, half the difference would be split with the customers. In reality, offering "reward" points is most likely. Actually, in reality, none of this is likely to see the light of day for reasons Grey already explained.

  • Fenlel
    Fenlel 14 klukkustundum síðan

One of the main reasons they don't do that is the "hidden" cost implementing of it. The cost of training the employee's on how to board that way. To put out signs, structures to educate passengers. Is too costly versus what they have now.

When I flew overseas with the military, the time to load and unload the plane was at a premium. We were instructed to load back to front, filling every seat as we went with the caveat that we were to simply get into our seats (not stowing our bags at first) and then once the cabin crew told us, we could stand and put our bags in the overhead compartment. One advantage was, for the most part our bags were all the same size and another was following instructions was not optional like in the civilian air travel industry. Nice video though

Southwest Airlines, though? They already get everyone to stand in a very precise order: A1-A30, B1-B30, C1-C30... they get to give the As to people who pay/fly more, they know the ages/groups of people flying as a family and could organize those groups accordingly, but then! At the moment they have the chance to perfectly board... they throw it back to chaos on the other side of the square-people-pipe as everyone just picks the seat they want. :o So close, if only they'd have you stand in order AND tell you what seat you'll be sitting in.

I would say the fastest boarding method is to have everyone go to their seat with their bags in their laps, and once everyone has boarded, they get up and stow their bags while the flight crew prepares for take off. The line would go much faster but there could potentially be problems with people who board with oversized bags.
Call me a nerd or whatever but I have an extremely small bag and it takes me two seconds to stow my bag and get out of the way.

Is Steffen perfect really making boarding faster? No! It would overcomplicate and slow down everything else: from the booking process to the organisation on board. While the boarding process the people would stop many times and look for their seat number which they will never find - since it's not in order. Something else would also happen: they'll turn around and go back walking against the order because they might have missed it. Steffen perfect to me sounds like the worst of all: a system which only works on theory with drones but not in real life with nervous, bored, annoyed, hungry or stressed humans!
Eliminating the hand baggage problem would be better: maybe placing it under the seats, so the people would have to climb one step to get to the place, then - from the seat, they might open a hatch under their feet or so...!

I travel within Europe by air a lot, and pretty much every airline here uses just two boarding groups. Priority boarding & business class ticketholders followed by everyone else at random.
Most airlines will board using both the front and rear of the plane and one airline in particular, Ryanair point blank refuse to use airbridges, even when parked on stands equipped with one because it's quicker for the plane to park up and deploy its airstairs and for a staircase to be attached to the rear. They've also limited the amount of hand luggage passengers can take on board to one small bag to speed up boarding (and make more money). If you're going for efficiency then Ryanair have it right.

What's the deal with airline food? Boarding groups I've seen on US flights, in other Ireland and UK, I've been boarded by row (e.g rows 20-30 are welcome to board). More and more people taking liberty with their baggage, which isn't enforced properly at the gate and it takes up my overhead bin space.

Incentivise passengers to not use carry-ons or only have carry-ons small enough to keep at the seat (backpacks, purses, baby-bags). I also wonder if the internal volume could be reshuffled to better account for passengers and their crap while still accounting for air conditioning plumbing, general accessibility and comfort. The upper fuselage space in many larger airliners goes totally underutiilized.

In the end it's all about stuffing passengers into a tin-can (well aluminium or composite these days).

In either so called "perfect" solution you have to order everyone by row which creates two ordering methods in to one, firstly the rear of the plane first and then by rows or columns. Then the human aspect of potentially separating parties, which include families (which is mentioned in the video). This is also require pre-planning from parties to decide who wants to sit where, and humans aren't that considerate generally. Just do it in each single grouping of 3 at a time, left and then right. simple

I worked for airlines for over 25 years. We have implemented all kinds of boarding methods. Your suggestion of alternative sides will not work simply because no passenger follows airline procedure how much ever the airline explains before boarding. I know Qatar Airways even separate passengers into zones at the waiting area of the gate. Still during boarding it's back to chaos.
